Volunteering at the Pediatric Oncology Hospital in Rabat

By Tiene (Ruth), IJC member -- For the third time, I had the privilege of volunteering in Rabat, Morocco’s capital. While my previous experiences focused on teaching English to women, I now had the opportunity to contribute to a project at the pediatric oncology hospital.

The work centered around medication safety, a critical aspect of pediatric oncology care. It was an incredibly rewarding experience as I witnessed the hospital team’s unwavering dedication to their young patients. Their collective spirit and sense of purpose created an atmosphere of hope, resilience, and excellence. Charity partners played a pivotal role in ensuring the hospital had the necessary resources and supporting several projects.

At the pediatric hospital, I encountered many families living in poverty, some of whom struggled to fully understand their child’s condition. This was deeply confronting, yet it fueled my resolve to remain engaged in this meaningful work. I look forward to returning later this year to see how the projects we initiated together with the team have evolved.

Outside of the hospital, I had the opportunity to explore Rabat. The warmth and hospitality of the city’s people made me feel welcome from the start. The vibrant streets and rich cultural heritage added depth to the experience. For the third time, staying with the same local family gave me a unique perspective on Moroccan life and traditions.

I wholeheartedly recommend this kind of volunteer experience to anyone, regardless of the activity. It aligns with the concept of tzedakah, a Jewish principle that goes beyond charity, embodying justice, kindness, and the moral responsibility to help others. These experiences remind us of the importance of global solidarity and the powerful impact we can have on the lives of individuals and communities.
