IJC Hebrew School Newsletter
Next Session: March 25
Happy Spring everyone! The sun (at least as I write this newsletter) is shining and the skies are blue, so Spring does feel like it has arrived. The next Hebrew School session is this coming Saturday the 25th. The teachers are asking if your kids could please bring a copy of a Hagada to school with them if possible.
Below is a summary from the the last session of Hebrew School: (Thank you teachers!)
Introduction/Ma'agal and Kita Aleph (Dafna):
We started Ma'agal talking about the Purim party and the show the parents put on. We then discussed the next holiday- Pesach and all of its four names. After we learned one of the songs from the Hagada - Avadim Hainu.
In Kita Aleph we started the first lesson by looking at some pictures of the slaves in old Egypt. We tried to understand how it would feel to be a slave, and what it actually means on a day-to-day basis. We then played a game of Pharaoh and the Slaves and talked about how it made us feel. We talked about slavery in America and in our time today, and asked if there is something we could do about it. After the break we told the story of Moses and made our own Baby Moses in a basket.
Kita Beit (Shaya):
After the Ma'agal we talked about Pesach, we listened to the song Go down Moses (Let my people go), and we sang it together with the ukulele. We also started to learn the lyrics of Ma Nishtana (with Eitan playing the chords on the ukulele). Then, we watched a short animation movie about the 10 plagues. Finally we created a card game, in Hebrew, on the theme of the holiday.
Bar Mitzvah class (Mayaan):
Last week after Ma'agal we made a K.S.W chart (think we Know, Know for Sure & Want to know) about Passover. We went over all the traditions and customs and tried think what the essence of the holiday is to us. We focused on the idea of slavery and freedom, being thankful for our freedom and being aware that even today there are people who aren't free and are living essentially in slavery. I gave the kids an assignment to read up on slavery in the modern world and find organizations that fight against it. We will work on a tzedakah project to choose an organization and see how we can support their cause.
Upcoming Snack Families: I know we've all done snack numerous times, but our small numbers mean we still need you to volunteer yet again to fill out the rest of the year. Could we get volunteers for the following weeks please? To access the Google doc click here.
