Again a deadly attack on a synagogue – this time near San Diego, California at the Chabad Poway shul on April 27th. The attacker shot dead Lori Gilbert-Kaye, a devoted 60 year old congregant who had shielded the rabbi from a spray of bullets. The attacker wounded Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein and a young girl from Sderot.
Again an attack during Shabbat services. It was also the last day of Pesach when a Yizkor memorial service was being held. And the shooting began during the Yizkor service. Again a virtual virus, a racist meme - one used in the past months in Pittsburgh and New Zealand -had served as a template for this carnage. The attacker had published an anti-Semitic manifesto on the Internet and apparently had plans to broadcast live his deed.
In the name of the IJC Board, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Lori Gilbert-Kaye on this very sad and tragic occasion. We extend our profound sympathy and compassion to those injured and/or traumatized by the attack. From the IJC's vantage point in Brussels, we so well understand what the Chabad shul has gone through and is now suffering. Your entire congregation is in our thoughts and prayers.
