The IJC's Hebrew School's mission is to strengthen our children's Jewish identity and create knowledgeable Jewish citizens. We do this by providing a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere in which we nourish our children's sense of Jewish culture and values.
When We Meet
There are 24 sessions throughout the school year typically on Saturday mornings from 10 - 12.30 at the IJC house. The Hebrew School does meet on several Sundays throughout the year when there are Bar/Bat Mitzvahs or holidays. The first session of Hebrew School for 2016-17 will be held on September 10, 2016.
Our Diverse Community
We serve a diverse community from around the world, which includes children of inter-faith couples. While the primary language of instruction is English, the majority of our students and teachers are multilingual. All children, regardless of English ability and prior instruction in Jewish studies are welcome.
What We Teach
In groups based on age and knowledge, our program consists of instruction in Hebrew, religious holidays and traditions, prayer, and the modern Jewish experience. There is an emphasis on creative expression through crafts and song, especially for the younger students. Older students are prepared for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The IJC is a progressive and open community that welcomes children and their families from a wide background of Jewish cultures and beliefs.
Our weekly classes are for students from age 5/6 up through Bar and Bat Mitzvah age. We also have a semi-monthly Tot Shabbat class and Teen groups that meet throughout the year. We are also looking for teens who are interested in helping occasionally or regularly with any age group.
We hold an annual overnight retreat for our school-age students as well as day trips and cultural activities. Last year, our Teen Group spent a week in Warsaw. There is also a comfortable space (with coffee) for parents to socialize during Hebrew School hours.
