Hebrew School will be held this coming Saturday, January 28th at Beth Hillel. The address is 80 Rue des Primeurs, 1190 Forest-Brussels. Parking can be found on the adjacent Avenue de la Armee Britanique.
There will be a lunch following Hebrew School on February 11th. Please mark your calendars. More details to come.
Please also note that we will be holding services and Hebrew School at The Quaker House on February 18. Again, this is a test to see if this location might work for the congregation. More details will be shared closer to the time.
A question was raised about Hebrew School on April 1st – will most families be around? Let’s discuss this weekend.
Below is a summary from the the last session of Hebrew School. Thank you to Maayan M. for substituting for Dafna this week.
Introduction/Ma'agal and Kita Aleph (Mayaan M): In the Ma'agal we learned the word for "king"- melech. We talked about kings and queens the kids are familiar with, the word Melech in the Brachot (eloheinu melech haolam) and other names and titles we use for God. Finally, we learned a new song about King David ("David melech Israel hai hai ve-kayam", literally meaning David king of Israel lives and exists) and danced a Hora style dance with it.
In the first session of Kita Alef (it was just Laila and Heike this time, small and intimate after the opening "Shalom" song), we compared two stories: the story of David and Goliath and the tale about a little mouse who saved the big lion. While making our own crowns, we discussed how small does not necessarily mean weak and how every creature in the world is important and has its role. We played a version of "marbles", a game with a big stone (representing Goliath) which has to be moved using small stones (representing a David). In the second session we continued with Hebrew and learned three new letters (Tsadik, Kuf and Reish) and simple words starting with these letters (tsav= a turtle, kof= a monkey and regel=foot)
Kita Beit (Shaya): After the Ma’agal we read the story of David and Saul as well as David and Goliath. We talked about different aspects of the stories and how they can be related to our days: What does it mean to be a King? What makes a king good and how is it different from modern forms of political leadership? What are the dangers of being in a power position? In the Hebrew part of the lesson we did a review of the words we learned (mostly numbers, directions, family) and we tried to use those word within/inside a phrase. Finally, we learn some key words of the Brachot and new words related to time: (day, month, year etc...)
Bar Mitzvah class (Mayaan S.): Last lesson was about the Kings of Israel (following the previous week’s lesson about the 12 tribes). For the first half we practiced memorizing and spelling our Hebrew vocabulary. We learned the Hebrew words for King (Melech) Crown (Keter) Kingdom (Mamalacha) and how to spell the names of David, Saul and Solomon in Hebrew. For the second part of the lesson we read and discussed the story of King Solomon and the disputed infant.
